Meeting Hlumelo
We’ve had the pleasure of meeting Hlumelo at our 50th Reunion. He spoke to us about his experiences at SACS. We are very proud that he has been chosen as part of the 2020 Prefect group!
Dirk Kemp had this to say:
“I must tell you that we were all literally blown away by his speech to our SACS ’69 reunion group last Wednesday evening! He spoke so well – his voice is clear and confident, but he still comes across as a well-grounded, humble (certainly not arrogant) lad. He was also quite candid with us about his initial difficulties and I think he earned everyone’s respect for having pulled through, formed friendships, made a huge contribution as a team player. He also seems to take his studies seriously and I hope he will be able to continue improving (given that he has had to make up for certain undeniable deficits in his primary and pre-primary education). I immediately thought: this boy should be a prefect – I am sure he will do himself and all of us who have supported him very proud!”

SACS ’69 50th Reunion
We’re excited to celebrate our reunion on Friday. However, not all of us can make it, so here are a few messages from those we’ll miss:

Unfortunately, my wife and I shall be at a conference in Europe at this time. Please pass on my best wishes to the class.

Unfortunately not. Attending weddings and whotnots! I will, however, be at the next big one in 2029 which will be even bigger because of the 200th SACS anniversary. Wonder how many of us will still be left?

Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend this reunion. I have allowed my passport to lapse and, with true Namibian efficiency, the Ministry of Home Affairs failed to order new blanks timeously and current information is that passports will only be available again in November.

Hi Brian, I was a definite for this function but earlier in the year developed a complication with my diabetes and have recently begun a new regime of treatment for a bloody awful associated issue called Charcot foot and I have decided that it best that I don’t attend the function. I would have loved to attend, but unfortunately, I will be unable to. I live in Australia and although I will be in Southern Africa in the weeks preceding the re-union, it has proven impossible for me to be in Cape Town for the re-union. It looks like a terrific programme and should be a lot of fun. Unfortunately, I shan’t be able to attend. A long time ago I committed to speaking at a symposium in Panama at the same time. Pity as I would’ve liked to attend. Haven’t seen many of these people for 50 years (hard to fathom). I hope that it is a great success.

My brain and heart had planned to be with you all for the reunion but my body had other plans and unfortunately, it won the battle. As much as I tried to rush the recovery process to be able to join you for the celebration it was not to be. Have an amazing time and take lots of photos. Will be thinking of you all

Quick Update
I saw Melo on Monday at his extra Maths lesson and he is really determined to do better in his June exams. He was selected to go to WP trials for Craven week on Tuesday but to his great disappointment, he remained on the bench and didn’t get any game time. With his strong character, I’m sure he will recover from his disappointment and not let it affect his state of mind for exams. On a happier note, he played for the SACS 2nd team against Rondebosch last Saturday and they won – huge smiles all round!
I also had a brief catch-up with his Mom who assures me they are all well and that Melo’s brother, Lusanda, has recently returned from the USA so he will be attending Melo’s rugby games once again. SACS are playing Paarl Gym this coming Saturday 25 May and their last game of the term on Saturday 1 June is the usual Classic Clash against Wynberg – both games are being played at home at SACS. For your interest here below is the rugby schedule for the third term.

Hlumelo continues to do well in Grade 11
Low marks for Maths and Life Sciences but there is a support plan.
Excellent (85%) mark for History.
Good marks for Afrikaans (1st Language), Life orientation, and Accounting.
Tutor’s comment:
“Apart from the disappointing results in two learning areas, This is a wonderful set of results. Hlumelo, I am confident you will improve the marks in those learning areas next term. Keep on working hard and be true to yourself. Good luck for the rugby season.”
(He has made the First team Squad, although only in Grade 11.)
We have Hlumelo’s latest report – Year End in Grade 10 (C6)
A good report with his average mark improving from 60,6% at mid year t0 63,6 at year end.
Better than many of us ever got!
High Mark 75%, lowest 53%.
All clear passes.
Pass Requirements for Grade 10:
- Pass English with at least 40%
- Pass any two other subjects with al least 40%
- Pass any three other subjects with at least 30%
Our guy is doing well!
Maths is still an issue (the 53%), but still not bad and we are sponsoring Extra Lessons. The pic is ‘Melo and his “mate”, Enos, doing the Extra Maths.

Hlumelo has a pleasant disposition and has grown into a responsible young man. He deserves to be commended for his efforts throughout the year, in class and on the sports field.
Hlumelo works to improve at Maths
Hlumelo is working hard at his extra maths lessons with Gill Gull. He’ll have the lessons every Monday until his final exams in November. He finds that they really do help so hopefully he can improve on his Maths mark this term and in the fourth term.

Message from Hlumelo’s Mentor
Hlumelo’s Grade 10 first term report shows a good effort all round with especially pleasing results in English 70%, Afrikaans 82%, Life Orientation 70% and History 88%. He will have to pay attention to his Life Science (56%) this term so that he is equipped to do better in his June exams. Accounting (63%) and Maths (64%) were satisfactory and I think he is at least holding his own but I will continue to encourage him to do better in these subjects. I saw him just before the end of the first term and he is pleased with his choice of subjects for Grade 10 – he says he loves History and is adjusting to the demands of Accounting.
He would like to have extra Maths lessons again this term before the June exams so if all agree I will organise for him to start towards the end of April with either Vicky Jacobs or Gill Gull, both of whom have tutored him before.
Hlumelo is well and really looking forward to the rugby season. He was off to Paarl for a rugby festival during the holidays and was excited to see what his team could do at the beginning of the season. He is in the U16A team this year and his first game is this Saturday against Paul Roos.
He would like to have extra Maths lessons again this term before the June exams so if all agree I will organise for him to start towards the end of April with either Vicky Jacobs or Gill Gull, both of whom have tutored him before.
